The centerpiece of this scenic and historic ride is the town of Huntsville. Huntsville proudly carries the mantle of Samuel Houston. Sam Houston commanded the Texas army as they fought for independence from Mexico, was President of the Republic of Texas, represented the state in the U.S. Senate, and served as Governor of Texas. His family spent 16 years in Huntsville, and it is where he died and is buried. Located in the Piney Woods—and in close proximity to Houston and Bryan/College Station—Huntsville makes an excellent base camp for rides to other historic destinations, scenic lakes, and National Forests in East Texas.
