Enjoy scenic backroads in this northern portion of the South Texas Plains. Stands of large oaks and native pecans dot vast rolling ranchlands, with various other trees following meandering creeks. Goliad, dating back to 1749, is one of the most historic towns in Texas. It played a major role in the Texas fight for independence from Mexico. Visit Mission Espíritu Santo, Presidio La Bahía, Fannin Plaza Park, and the county’s 1894 courthouse. Scenic roads lead to Weesatche, Yorktown, Nordheim, and Runge—rural towns with German history. Churches and community halls often hold festivals celebrating their cultural roots. A major draw for Beeville is the Texas Mile. This three-day event happens each March and October. Motorcycles, automobiles, and land speed racers are accurately timed in a mile run down the Chase Field Industrial Complex straightaway. Spectators are always welcome.
