Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Hill Country, Fredericksburg is recognized as one of the best small towns in Texas. The original town survey was modeled on those of German villages along the Rhine, with a long and wide central avenue. Today’s visitors will recognize that avenue as Main Street, the heart of the National Historic District. It is lined with buildings from the mid-19th century, the same period as most of the structures in the 40-block district. Preservation of these structures has been aided by strict city codes. Out-of-town guests are encouraged to stop at the Fredericksburg Visitor Center and acquire a map of the walking trail and important sites.
