J.P. Werner Cafe

This Saturday, my wife, Lu, and I headed to the J.P. Werner Café in Cameron, Texas, renowned for its delicious breakfast and lunch offerings. The journey started on Chandler Road, also known as University Boulevard in Round Rock. The northeasterly route took us for a brief jaunt north on Texas Highway 95, then Farm-to-Market Road 1331, Farm-to-Market Road 486, and finally U.S. Highway 190 toward Cameron.

We found ourselves on scenic two-lane country roads, flanked by oak trees and cornfields. The road curved gently, and picturesque views beckoned us to stop and soak in the beauty of our surroundings. As we rode along FM 1331, we marveled at longhorn cattle silhouetted against the clear blue sky.

Further down the road, we stumbled upon the Exotic Wildlife Game Ranch on FM 486. Axis deer roamed gracefully, their spotted coats glistening in the sunlight. This unexpected encounter added a unique dimension to our trip, highlighting the region’s diverse wildlife.

After about an hour and fifteen minutes, we arrived in Cameron. Founded in the mid-19th century, Cameron reflects its heritage as a hub for the cotton and cattle trades. The town was named after E.H. Cameron, a prominent figure in Texan politics. Its streets are lined with historic buildings.

Cafe Interior

As we arrived at the J.P. Werner Café, built in 1939, we were drawn to the building’s classic façade and signage. Known for its nostalgic charm, the café embodies the essence of a historic Texas town. It features an old soda fountain that serves house-made syrups. Adding to the ambiance, soft melodies from the country music of the 1940s and ‘50s provided the perfect backdrop for a delightful dining experience.

Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. We were particularly excited to try their famous Dutch baby pancakes, which are light and fluffy. The café is also known for its Texas-sized biscuits, generously smothered in rich sausage gravy. In addition to these favorites, the menu features ranch hash (seasoned potato hash browns) served alongside eggs cooked to your liking.

As we explored the menu further, we discovered a selection of pies that could easily compete for top honors at a county fair. Pies are baked daily, including pecan, fruit, and cream varieties that beckon for dessert. Lunch is available from 11 a.m. until closing at 2:30 p.m. The lunch menu offers hearty options, including juicy burgers, crisp salads, and sandwiches filled with fresh ingredients. J.P. Werner Café serves up homestyle American fare and scratch meals in a warm and inviting atmosphere with friendly service.

After finishing our breakfast, Lu and I set off on State Route 77 south, followed by State Route 79 west, making our way back to Round Rock. The entire trip lasted approximately two and a half hours, covering a distance of 123 miles. The route offered a captivating array of landscapes and unexpected discoveries of exotic game, enhancing the overall experience of our excursion.
