Texas’ Spanish history is very much in evidence by the presidios that mark the historic frontier across Texas. Some are well known, like the Alamo, while others are off the beaten path. Presidio San Luis de Las Amarillas, more commonly known as Mission San Saba is one of these. Built in 1757, the presidio was constructed to protect the mission. Although much is in ruin, much of the perimeter wall and stonework remains.
It’s a an interesting place, with its castle-like turret and stonework. There are plenty of photo ops, so be sure to bring your knight’s armor and broadsword.
Mission San Saba is located, off US 190 northwest of Menard, along the San Saba River.
