Aggies to Astros

Our star-studded movie cruise to Houston begins in College Station. Late night movie buffs might have Revenge Of the Nerds (1984) in their collection. It included scenes from Kyle Field. Whoop! Yankee’s Tavern, east of town near Carlos, has been a popular biker bar since it opened in 2000. Farm-to-Market Road 1486 rolls south through the prairies before arriving in Magnolia. Head east to The Woodlands: The independent film Sacrifice (2015) was filmed in the area. Scenes for the final tournament in Tin Cup (1996) were shot in Kingwood. There should be a coffee table book devoted to movies made in Houston. Films such as Apollo 13 (1995) helped staple the NASA name-tag on this city. Several late night street locations were chosen for the thriller RoboCop 2 (1990). Add to the list Brewster McCloud (1970), shot in the Astrodome; Sugarland Express (1974), filmed in Sugar Land; and the movie that drew the world’s attention toward Houston—Urban Cowboy (1980), catapulting John Travolta, Debra Winger, and Gilley’s in Pasadena to mega-fame. See if you can ride the mechanical bull in Houston’s Rebels Honkey Tonk or Whiskey River night club.
